Urban Adamah is seeking 3 Winter Farm Hands to serve as the key support team to maintain the Farm over the Winter and Spring. The Farm Hands will have a range of responsibilities from farm chores such as milking goats, feeding chickens and watering the greenhouse, to mulching paths, harvesting and weeding. Specific responsibilities are described below.
Farm Maintenance: Under the tutelage of and sometimes alongside the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager, serving as the primary farm workers helping to maintain the farm over the course of the Winter and Spring. This includes planting, harvesting and weeding, sowing seeds in the greenhouse, keeping the plants watered and Winter pruning our trees and perennials. The Winter Farm Hand team will be responsible for taking care of the chickens, the goats, the worms and occasionally the bees. Additional work to include maintaining cleanliness around the site, mulching paths, turning compost, making feed and dump runs.
Animals and Chores: The Winter Farm Hand team shares responsibility for all daily farm chores, Monday-Sunday, including milking goats, feeding and rounding up chickens, opening and closing and watering the propagation greenhouse and the Aquaponics greenhouse, and maintaining the site irrigation schedule.
Other Responsibilities: Urban Adamah has a very lean staff. The Winter Farm Hands may be asked to support the organization in other ways as needed.
Supervision: The Winter Farm Hands will be supervised by the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager.
We are looking for 3 energetic, organized, hard-working and self-motivated individuals to join our Farm team. Candidates must have demonstrated experience maintaining a high level of physical activity and a positive attitude at the same time! Horticulture skills and experience desired. Also required is a high level of emotional maturity, strong verbal communication skills and the ability to work successfully as part of a small team. This individual should be in personal alignment with the mission of Urban Adamah, which is to use the tools of mindfulness, sustainable agriculture, social action, and Jewish spirituality to build a more loving, just, and sustainable world.
Compensation and Schedule: This is a Temporary, Full-time, Non-Exempt position that runs from November 20th, 2018 through June 17th, 2019. Compensation for this position is $15.50 per hour.
This position requires availability to work a six to eight hour shift between 7am and 7pm most weekdays. It also requires availability to cover chores on all weekends as well as a monthly Sunday volunteer day. Schedules for a 40 hour work week will be constructed in consultation with the supervisor. Responsibility for covering chores on weekends will be shared amongst the 3 members of the Farm Hand team.
In lieu of secular or religious holidays, this position offers 5 days of paid time off that can be taken any time when scheduled in advance with a supervisor. Additionally, this position accrues paid sick time in accordance with the Urban Adamah Personnel Code and California Law.
