Youth and Family Educator and JOFEE Fellow

The Urban Adamah Youth and Family Educator/JOFEE (Jewish, Outdoor, Food and Environmental Education) Fellow will be responsible for manifesting the mission of Urban Adamah in a variety of education and administrative roles. These include serving as an educator in our programs for youth, families and young adults as well as providing some coordination support to such programs and maintaining our children’s garden.

The Youth and Family Educator (YFE)/JOFEE Fellow will also serve as fellow in the third JOFEE Fellowship cohort. This is a national, year-long program of professional development, mentorship and training, specifically for Jewish environmental educators working at organizations around the country. Educational Programs

Serve in a leadership role in the following community programs throughout the year

Group Programs/Field Trips
Urban Adamah runs group programs for Jewish, public, and secular private school groups, pre-school age through high school, as well as programs for congregations and other community groups. Program length ranges from 1-4 hours. The JOFEE fellow will serve as a farm educator for all group programs, and over time, will take on increasing levels of program management responsibility.

Overnight Programs
We host an increasing number and variety of overnight programs, including multi-day programs for Jewish Day Schools, Alternative Spring Break weeks for college students, specialty camps for teens, and Shabbaton programs for teens. The JOFEE fellow will serve in a lead educator role in the development and implementation of these programs.

Family Programs
Urban Adamah’s Family Program Series offers public, year-round programming several Sundays per month for families with children of all ages. The JOFEE fellow implements these programs along with other staff throughout the year and is adept at facilitating community building and hands-on learning projects for children ages 3 and up, and their families.

Summer/Winter Day Camp
The JOFEE fellow serves as a senior educator/group leader, working under the supervision of the Summer Camp Co-Directors. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead groups of kids ages 3-10 in Urban Adamah’s Jewish Farming Summer and Winter Camps
  • Facilitate both small group and camp-wide activities
  • Support Camp Directors with camp administration and logistics before, after and during camp

Program Logistics and Coordination
Provide logistical and administrative support for youth and family programs, including such tasks as outreach to schools and teachers, procuring materials, coordinating with the farm and site teams, etc.

Children’s Garden Maintenance
UA has a small dedicated children’s garden space including annual vegetables, perennial fruiting vines and trees, and native pollinator attractors. This person will be responsible for maintaining the garden in coordination with the Youth and Families Program Team and the Farm and Site Teams.

Training and Professional Development
This individual will be required to attend three in-person seminars organized by Hazon in 2018 and 2019. These include:

      1. March 6-20, 2018: JOFEE Fellowship orientation and training intensive at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center – Falls Village, CT
      2. September 2018: JOFEE Network Gathering & Mid-year Training Seminar
      3. January 2019: Final seminar and closing retreat

Additionally, this individual will spend approximately 5-6 hours a month on outside mentorship and continued professional development organized by the Hazon/the JOFEE Fellowship

Position Requirements
This person should be in personal alignment with the mission, values and heart/mind/body/spirit approach of Urban Adamah; have a background in farm and garden-based education and/or Jewish experiential education; have previous experience working with young children ages 3-12 in an educational, outdoor setting; have experience leading overnight programs with youth, have a Jewish learning background; and have one or more of the following: outdoor skills, gardening, animal care, wilderness skills such as fire-making, and nature-based crafting, etc; have experience teaching through a diverse array of modalities, including music, art, drama, or movement; is kind and enthusiastic, a skilled communicator, is willing to try new things and is flexible, creative, caring, and able to maintain a positive team attitude throughout a long work day.

Desired but Not Required
A degree or other significant training in education; community-building skills and experience working with diverse communities; Non-Violent Communication training; anti-oppression training; conversant/fluent in Hebrew, Spanish, or other locally-spoken language besides English.

Dates and Schedule
This position starts October 27 or as soon as possible thereafter. (We will also consider applicants who are unable to start until January). This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position that often necessitates working evenings, Sundays, or Jewish holidays (all included in the 40-hour work week). During our Fall and Spring program seasons, the work week includes most Sundays for either a half or full day. In cases when the individual is asked to work outside of normal business hours, additional time off is provided to ensure that the work week is kept to 40 hours. The JOFEE fellow will work at Urban Adamah’s campus at 1151 6th Street, Berkeley. This is a 15-month position with the possibility of extension/contract renewal.

Salary and Benefits
Salary is $35,000 annually, plus health care, generous paid vacation, and other benefits consistent with the Urban Adamah Personnel Code. All training days provided by the JOFEE fellowship are considered workdays, and all expenses connected to JOFEE trainings are covered by Urban Adamah and Hazon. Housing available in-lieu of partial salary starting June, 2018.
