Urban Adamah is currently seeking a full-time Facilities Manager. This individual will hold overall responsibility for the management of the facilities at Urban Adamah’s newly developed 2.2-acre organic farm and community center in West Berkeley. This individual will work with the support of the Facilities Assistant, as well as hire outside contractors as needed, overseeing all minor new building projects, and all general building and site maintenance. The Facilities Manager will work closely with Urban Adamah’s Farm Manager, Education Team, and Public Programs Team to ensure that the site’s physical elements support the organization’s ecological, spiritual and community building values and goals. The Facilities Manager supervises the full-time Facilities Assistant and is responsible for helping occasionally to supervise Urban Adamah fellows, seasonal apprentices, and volunteers for site related projects. This position is supervised by Urban Adamah’s Associate Director.
Facilities Management: The Facilities manager is responsible for general maintenance and upkeep of the Urban Adamah Campus. This includes but is not limited to challenges and opportunities as they arise in any of the following areas: plumbing, electrical, underground utilities, hardscape, carpentry, fencing, drainage, fire access, safety and security, compliance issues, etc. The Facilities Manager is responsible for the upkeep of all buildings which include an admin building, Fellows Residence, two large greenhouses, teaching kitchen, community tent, bathhouse, program yurt, equipment sheds, animal housing structures, and to be built in 2019 a 46 bed retreat center. The Facilities Manager maintains a comprehensive maintenance plan and scheduling calendar and oversees/executes all of its components in a regular and timely manner. Responsible for stocking, organizing, and maintaining tools, materials, and equipment for the facilities department including conducting a yearly inventory review. Responsible for waste management systems across the site.
Carpentry/Building Projects: Although much of the infrastructure on our newly developed site is built, there are small projects to build in-house as well as ongoing maintenance of a wide variety of wooden structures. These projects will all be planned, budgeted, overseen, and implemented by our Facilities Manager.
Edible Landscape: The Urban Adamah farm seeks to be a model for sustainable agricultural development and edible landscape design. The Facilities Manager will be responsible for helping implement the landscape plan developed together with other staff, as well as supervising on-going maintenance of some landscaped areas, including staying on top of weeds in all parts of the site, including our exterior borders, other than cropping and orchard areas.
Health and Safety: The Facilities Manager is responsible for being up to date on best health and safety practices, continuously improving our safety and emergency preparedness policies and documents, and conducting regular trainings for staff and fellows in health, safety, and emergency procedures. This includes maintaining all appropriate health and safety standards in our teaching kitchen. The Facilities Manager ensures that Urban Adamah remains a safe, healthy, and ADA compliant site. The Facilities Manager is responsible for ensuring that all staff are trained in safe use of all equipment on site other than basic gardening implements (the farm team is responsible for that).
Sustainability and Accessibility: The Facilities Manager serves an important role for Urban Adamah’s vision of both sustainability and accessibility. In addition to serving on both of these committees, the Facilities Manager helps ensure that Urban Adamah upholds its commitment to sustainability and access across the site, overseeing ADA compliance, sustainable sourcing and best disposal and recycling practices.
Teaching: Urban Adamah is an educational farm and community center. It is our hope to hire a Facilities Manager who is interested in sharing their skills and experience with the larger community including offering classes for the Urban Adamah fellows, school groups, and members of the general public as time and schedule permits. The Facilities Manager will be responsible for providing informal instruction, mentoring, and supervision of Urban Adamah fellows and apprentices as they assist in the execution of maintenance and construction responsibilities.
Additional Responsibilities: Urban Adamah has a very lean staff. Occasionally, the Facilities Manager will be asked to perform duties not explicitly listed in this job description. In addition, the Facilities Manager is asked to participate in weekly staff meetings and perform administrative tasks essential for smooth operation of the site. The Facilities Manager is often called upon to support the site needs of programs, as well as serves as a resource for troubleshooting and improving site wide systems.
We are looking for an individual with at least 5 years of experience in facilities maintenance and/or management, including building systems, hardscape, and landscaping/irrigation systems. Any of the following additional skill-sets are highly desired: finish carpentry, facilities management, electrical, plumbing, natural building, building engineering, 3D modeling/CAD. We are hoping that this individual also has some teaching experience. A high level of emotional maturity and exceptional communication skills are required. Proficient in basic computer skills including Word, Excel, Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat. This individual should also be in personal alignment with the mission of Urban Adamah, which is to use the tools of mindfulness, sustainable agriculture, social action and Jewish tradition to build loving, just and sustainable communities.
Schedule: This is a full-time 40-hour per week position, that is generally Monday-Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 pm. Occasionally, the Facilities Manager may be asked to work a slightly different work schedule that includes weekends. This position may require more than 40 hours a week on some weeks. Hours worked beyond 40 are compensated with additional time off.
Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position with benefits including health care and paid vacation, as described in Urban Adamah’s personnel code. Salary is competitive and DOE.
